Kazimierz Dolny
Kazimierz Dolny (Yiddish: Kuzmir) is a picturesque small town in Poland. It is located around 150km from Warsaw (2.5 hours drive). The Golden Age of the town was 16th and the 17th century, because of the trade in grain conducted along the Vistula river. The town preserved unique Renaissance urban plan and appearance. XIX century more than half of the city inhabitants (54%) were Jewish. During WWII the Jewish community of Kazimierz disappeared: in 1940 Nazi authorities formed a ghetto and in March 1943 most of its inhabitants were killed. The only reminders of once great Jewish community of Kazimierz are the XVIII century synagogue, the building of the kosher butcher's shop and the Jewish cemetery. After the war, the town became an artistic and tourist attraction. Painters and landscapists started coming to Kazimierz. Artistic events such as the Polish Folklore Festival, Klezmer Music Festival and the Film Festival "The Film Summer" are being organized every year. The town hosts also numerous museums: the Nadwislanskie Museum, the Natural Science Museum, Kamienica Celejowska, the Goldsmith Museum, the Kuncewiczówka House, and numerous art galleries.
